How Many Transformers Are Needed For a 4MW Photovoltaic Power Plant?

09-03 2024 | By:

The transformer mentioned here refers to a box-type transformer, which is a box transformer. In photovoltaic power generation, it is generally called a photovoltaic step-up box transformer. Generally speaking, for a 4MW photovoltaic power generation project, according to our previous business experience, it is necessary to configure two box transformers.

First, we need to clarify the total power of the photovoltaic power generation project and the capacity of each transformer, and then calculate the number of transformers required.

It is known that the total power of the photovoltaic power generation project is 4MW, that is, 4000KW.

Next, we consider the capacity of the transformer. The question mentioned that the transformer capacity is often 1600KVA and 2000KVA. But note that the unit here is KVA (kilovolt-ampere), while the power unit of the photovoltaic power generation project is KW (kilowatt). In practical applications, since the power factor of the transformer is usually less than 1, the KVA capacity of the transformer should be slightly greater than or equal to the KW power. But here, in order to simplify the calculation, we assume that the power factor of the transformer is close to 1, that is, the KVA capacity can be approximately equal to the KW power.

If you choose a 1600KVA transformer:

The power that a single transformer can carry is about 1600KW. Then, the number of transformers required for a 4MW photovoltaic power generation project is:

n=

1600

4000

=2.5

Since the transformer cannot be divided, the actual number of transformers required should be rounded up, that is, 3. However, according to the business experience in the question, usually 2 transformers are enough. This may be because under certain conditions (such as sufficient sunlight, high power generation efficiency, etc.), two transformers are enough to meet the demand. But here we only consider from the perspective of mathematical calculation, 3 should be required.

If you choose a 2000KVA transformer:

The power that a single transformer can carry is about 2000KW. Then, the number of transformers required for a 4MW photovoltaic power generation project is:

n=

2000

4000

=2

At this time, two transformers can meet the demand.

In summary, from the perspective of mathematical calculation, if you choose a 1600KVA transformer, theoretically you need 3 units; but if you choose a 2000KVA transformer, you only need 2 units. According to the business experience in the question, a 4MW photovoltaic power generation project usually requires 2 box transformers.

Therefore, the final answer is: about 2 box transformers are needed.
