What Are The Classifications Of Box-Type Transformers?

03-17 2025 | By:

Box-type transformers (box transformers) are actually not transformers. We have mentioned the difference between box-type transformers and transformers before, but box-type substations, also known as prefabricated substations or prefabricated substations. It is a high-voltage switchgear, distribution transformer and low-voltage distribution device. It is a factory-prefabricated indoor and outdoor compact distribution equipment, integrated according to a certain wiring scheme. It organically combines the transformer step-down and low-voltage distribution functions. It is installed in a moisture-proof, rust-proof, dust-proof, rat-proof, fire-proof, anti-theft, heat-insulated, fully enclosed, and movable steel structure box. It is particularly suitable for urban network construction and transformation. It emerged after the civil building substation. A new substation. Box-type substations are suitable for mines, factories, oil and gas fields, and wind power stations. It replaced the original civil distribution room and substation and became a new type of transformer distribution equipment.

Box transformers are usually classified into prefabricated substations (European box transformers) and combined substations (American box transformers) as well as assembled box transformers. So what is the difference between European box transformers and American box transformers? So first of all, we should understand the concepts of these three types.

(1) Combined substation. The assembled substation will be equipped with high and low voltage complete sets of equipment and transformers in a metal box, and there will be an operation corridor between the high and low voltage distribution devices. This type of box is large in size and has a low frequency of use.

(2) Combined device substation. The high and low voltage distribution devices of the combined device substation do not use existing complete sets of equipment, but directly install the high and low voltage control and protection electrical equipment into the box to make it a whole. Since the overall design is considered to be maintenance-free, there is no need to operate the corridor inside the box. This can reduce the volume of the box type. This is a European-style box type change and is a commonly used type.

(3) Integrated substation. The integrated substation is the so-called American box substation. It is based on the simplification of high and low voltage control and protection devices, integrating high and low voltage distribution devices with the transformer body in the transformer box to make it a whole. This box transformer is small in size, and its volume is similar to that of ordinary oil-immersed transformers of the same capacity. It only occupies about 1/3 of the volume of the European box with the same capacity.
